Israel’s capital city is returning to be also a capital of contemporary art. New galleries, artists’ studios, artist run spaces, municipal venues and more – are scattered around the city. In this tour we will explore the contemporary art scene in Jerusalem, focusing on the avant-garde collective art. We will visit places where art is made and exhibited and meet the people who make it all happen. We will try to understand if there is a place for art-community values in a capitalist and materialistic society, how the municipality reacts to these initiatives and how the traditional art world accepts them. All this in Jerusalem, which surprisingly performs as the perfect arena for collective art activity.
Mahane Yehuda MarketMahane Yehuda Market was established in the 19 th century as an impromptu farmers’ market. Over the 120 years since its establishments, this market had undergone many changes. In recent years, alongside the old stalls and mythological shops, the market has seen the opening of gourmet restaurants, specialized butcheries, and boutique delis. During the tour, we’ll get to know unique cheeses, taste fine Argentinian meat, and fresh market pastries. We’ll visit local bars and take high quality drinks together with our food. We’ll try famous Jerusalemite dishes, assemble our own wonderful tasty market plate, and of course have a sweet and delicate dessert to finish off.
Just two weeks passed between the end of the Six Day War (1967) and the decision to annex East Jerusalem. This decision changed dramatically the fate of the city and the relation between its inhabitants. We will visit some of the neighborhoods of East Jerusalem: Issawiyeh, Jabel Mukaber, Shuafat and the village of Wallaje. While there, we will try to understand the very special situation in which the residents of East Jerusalem live. In the course of our tour, we will meet with representatives of Elad, an organization that encourages Jews to move to East Jerusalem as well as meet representatives of the “I Love Silowan” organization, which are active against its “Jewification”.
